The Art of Troma
For The Art of Troma, I designed a slipcase and book cover celebrating Troma’s cult-film legacy. Created in collaboration with Dynamite Comics and Troma, the project's chosen direction was to look as if it had been plucked straight from an 1980s video store shelf, with the book itself designed to mimic a VHS tape. The challenge was to elevate what is now an obsolete, albeit nostalgic, medium into a lasting, collectible object.
My Approach
I drew heavily from the over-the-top visual language of 1980s VHS boxes - a style that pushed boundaries, always trying to scream louder than its neighbors just to grab a customer's attention. The layout and typography choices intentionally echoed the stacked logos, warning labels, and chaotic, sometimes poorly designed back cover energy of rental tapes, giving the package an authentic feel.
Reflections
This project was an exercise in controlled chaos - channeling the scrappy charm of the VCR era and embracing a playful gimmick, all while presenting it as a piece collectors would proudly display. The result paid respect to Troma’s underground legacy, bridging ’80s video nostalgia with the polish of a contemporary art book.
