Disney Villains:
The Graphic Novels
The Graphic Novels
When Dynamite Entertainment launched a crowdfunded box set of Disney Villains comics, compiling the Scar, Cruella De Vil, Hades, and Maleficent series, I had the opportunity to conceptualize something special. The challenge was to develop a design language that unified the series as a whole while allowing each book to stand on its own. The packaging needed to feel like a seamless extension of the comics, while each cover had to capture the distinct personality and brand identity of its character without losing the integrity of the larger collection.

My Approach
I didn’t want this to be just four covers sitting in a box. Instead, I explored how the books could interact as a set. That’s where the idea of a continuous spine illustration came in. By designing artwork that flows across all four volumes, the collection becomes more than just individual issues - it becomes a unified display piece.
To test the concept, I produced 3D mockups of a slipcase and cover. Seeing the concept come together in 3D really helped me refine how the artwork would align and how the slipcase would frame the books.
Reflections
This was a creative experiment that pushed me to think differently about packaging and collectible design. I liked the challenge of balancing each villain’s unique cover identity with a harmonized look that ties the set together. In the end, it’s one of those projects where the process was just as rewarding as the final result.
