The Art of Goosebumps
Dynamite Comics commissioned me to design the cover for The Art of Goosebumps, a hardcover art book showcasing Tim Jacobus’s iconic cover paintings for R.L. Stine’s bestselling series. The design needed to integrate Jacobus’s artwork while capturing the instantly recognizable Goosebumps aesthetic and elevating it to meet the expectations of a now-grown art book audience.
My Approach
I made Jacobus’s artwork the star of the design, incorporating some of his most representative and striking paintings. To amplify his art and present the series' mix of young adult horror and camp, I built the surrounding design with a visual cue pulled from the Goosebumps brand: gooey, drippy type and frame treatments in neon green. The goal was to construct a cover at home in the Goosebumps language
Reflections
The final cover bridges two worlds - celebrating the nostalgic 1990s Goosebumps vibe fans love while presenting Jacobus’s artwork with the sophistication of an art retrospective.
